The Government should put as much effort into mental illness as they do financing wars....

My name is Raven, I am new to this site, I saw Joey while I was watching the Red Sox game and saw the website on there. I also saw the effect that it had on one of the commentators, who stated that he was/is an alcoholic. You could tell he was very moved, as was I. There is a stigma that goes along with mental illness, be it, anxiety, depression, etc. What people don't understand or experience themselves, scares them. I suffer from depression and anxiety. I have tried meds but don't like the side effects. I do however keep my valium with me at all times...just incase. lol.

I have taken 4 Psychology classes and have learned quite a bit about myself. I am actually going for my associates degree in Human Services but I have put it on hold for now.

My mind never stops working, I have remote control thoughts.....I need to know how to turn it off. I have tried meditation, but my mind wonders..lol. I tried smoking a joint, but my heart races and have anxiety, so I can't win. I feel as though a sense of humor is what gets me through life a bit better. I HATE when people tell me "just control it yourself"....I can't always.....I am really happy that I was watching that game and found out about this site....THANKS Joey!!!!!  Much Respect!!

i have a similar situation, a racing mind. i used to smoke marijuana, for many years in fact, but about 6 months ago i started getting paraniod. you mentioned valium-i was prescribed that a while back but it soon loost it's effectiveness. a friend of mine will give me some klonopin once in a while which i find to be very effective but no doctor will prescribe it for me due to my substance abuse history. i also saw this site promoted during the red sox game last night so i'm obviosly new to it and i hope it will be helpful.

I too saw Joe Pantoliano during the Red Sox game last night, Bravo for his efforts to remove the stigma of mental health issues! I suffered for 33 years of my life, not understanding what was wrong, until seeing a Paxil commercial that mirrored my life. I have been taking medication for 9 years now, and part of my well being is talking to EVERYONE about it. I too believe that this "MEDICAL CONDITION" is nothing to be ashamed of.........

Hiya Raven,

I was watching that Sox game, too.  That how I came to this site.  I thought it was very touching to see Eck open up like that and agree that he obviously thought Joe's mission was pretty special.

I know what you mean about your mind wandering.  Sometimes I feel like there's so much going on in my head I can't begin to make sense.  I'll be sitting there, minding my own business, when all of a sudden. . .  my thoughts will be off somewhere and I'll have no idea how they got there, what train of thought brough them to that destination!

Keep your sense of humor.  It's one of the greatest gifts and survival mechanisms!
