I was watching the show Inside Washington on PBS today when a panelist and Washington Post editor, Colby King, said "I'd punch them out" refering to protestors at the funerals of dead soldiers.
There is a limitation on free speech one of which is "fighting words" - the type of language Mr. King employed.
I have BDs, which is why I'm one this site, and have a reduced ability to distinguish between hyperbole and real threat especially by supervisors in employment. When I request accommodation it is denied often citing First Amendment reasons. Thus I've been financially ruined and homeless as a result.
As a result I've been active in the Healthy Workplace movement attempting to reduce workplace bullying. Recenly a Rutgers gay student took his own life due to his roommate's spying on and publicizing his sexual activities. Bullying in all it's forms is a serious issue and, at a minimum, the employment of "fighting words" or the incitement to violence is something that should be discouraged. Bullying also has a disparate impact on people with BDs which is not recognized by the EEOC nor is the EEOC supportive of needed ADA accommodations.
This entire web site was created to de-stigmatize BDs. I suggest better support for anti-bullying efforts is a part of the de-stigmatizing process. And how about that "kinder, gentler nation" that was promised 20 years ago.
