I had my tonsils out at age 7. There's not one doctor that asks me about that; I don't have to explain it on medical histories, and no one gives me a funny look about "Missing organs I was born with." I also had my appendix out, my uterus and cervix too! Again - I find few medical professionals who are interested in this fact, except when I see a new OBGYN. I guess it helps to take the guess work out of searching for something that's not there.

It wasn't until I began to heal that I realized how much Stigma I had encountered. Studying to become an Advocate for the Mentally Ill really opened my eyes. (Advocacy Unlimited in CT rocks!) I was used to doctors ignoring my complaints, saying it was all in my head (even though three of those times I ended up in the ER or surgery). My name is Sarah, I am 30 years old. I am bipolar and BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), but I don't let the "stigma" of that stop me. I tell EVERYONE I know about it. Not at first though. I tell them after they get to know me and when I do tell them they always say "But you seem so normal!" (All of my friends will gladly tell you I am oddly quirky, but not one of them would have ever fingered me for "acting" like what they thought a person with a "mental illness" would act like.) ...
